Accor today announced that it is accelerating its expansion in the all-inclusive market with the launch of its multi-branded All-Inclusive Collection – an expanded offering that builds upon the success and experience in the luxury-all-inclusive market gained over 20+ years under the Rixos brand (predominantly in Turkey, the Middle East and Central Asia).

Accor created the All-Inclusive Collection using not only Rixos properties, but by including its luxury and premium brands with Fairmont, Sofitel, Pullman, Swissôtel and Mövenpick in the Collection. International expansion of the all-inclusive business will be centered in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Turkey, Asia, Central America and the Caribbean.

The Collection will initially focus on the further expansion of Rixos’ footprint to 50 properties in the network and pipeline and will scale and diversify as part of a longer term multi-branded strategy of having over 100 all-inclusive resorts in the next five years.

Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha and Rixos Qetaifan Doha—which includes one of the world’s largest waterparks—will both open in time for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Swissôtel Sharm el Sheikh will open later this year as the first non-Rixos branded property in the All-Inclusive Collection; it will have 1,350 rooms, a water park, multiple dining, beach club and entertainment facilities.

The All-Inclusive Collection  will include new openings of Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha and the Rixos Qetaifan Doha, which includes one of the world’s largest waterparks. Both these resorts will open in time for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Also opening later in 2022 will be the first non-Rixos branded property in the collection - the Swissôtel Sharm el Sheikh.

Carefully curated entertainment programmes, for both day and evening activities, will play a central role, with spectacular shows and multiple sporting activities per resort accompanied by world-class spa and wellness facilities. This will be complemented by a breadth of restaurant, bar, beach club and nightlife concepts that will be inspired and led by Carte Blanched, with each venue providing diverse and culturally relevant cuisines and culinary experiences.

Since the pandemic, there has been a substantial increase in demand for travel to All-inclusive resorts.Accor and Hyatt are 2 of the groups well-positioned to respond to this trend.

Accor expands Australian footprint with new deal

Accor expands Australian footprint with new deal

Salter Brothers has announced that its portfolio of hotels, acquired as part of the recent Travelodge acquisition, will be joining the global hotel giant Accor at the start of the 2023 financial year.

The management agreement, which includes an industry-leading link to ESG outcomes, will see its hotels (2000+ rooms) rebranded to (budget brand) ibis Styles, Mercure and Novotel (mid-range) hotels when they join the 340+ Accor network of hotels, apartments and resorts across Australia.

The deal is Accor’s largest integration since its $1.2 billion acquisition of Mantra Group in 2018, which brought the Art Series, Peppers, Mantra and BreakFree brands under Accor.

Nine of the properties will become Mercure hotels, growing Mercure from 44 properties in Australia to 53, making Mercure the largest and fastest growing global mid-scale brand in Australia with more than 50 hotels.

Both Accor and Slater believe that the Australian travel market is starting to show very promising signs of recovery and the deal signals their confidence in the return of corporate travel.

We anticipate that all the properties will participate in the loyalty program, Accor Live Limitless.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet expanding

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet expanding

Following on from the news of 2 March about the launch of RCYC's first yacht Evrima (pictured), the company confirmed yesterday that it has recently placed orders for superyacht twins, Ilma and Luminara, which will sail in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

Compared to the Evrima, the new superyachts are both substantially larger (228 suites compared to 149 on Evrima) and have enhanced sustainability, including a move to dual-fuel engines utilising liquified natural gas (LNG) as their main fuel source.

The new superyachts will feature itineraries ranging from seven to 10 nights in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

The Virgin Hotels Glasgow is in a prime City Centre position overlooking the River Clyde and is an easy walk to Central Station, St Enoch underground station and Buchanan Street (Glasgow's shopping area), making it an ideal base to explore the city.

My Millennium, the loyalty program of Millennium Hotels & Resorts (MHR), today announced an upgrade.   Effective from April 2022, a second membership tier has been introduced, so there will be Members and a "Prestige" tier, attained after stays totalling 10 nights.  Currently all My Millennium members:

  • earn 10 My Points for every USD 100 charged to a booked room at participating properties
  • during the month of a Member's birthday, the earning rate is tripled to 30 My Points / USD 100
  • My Points earned in blocks of 10 nights will be doubled
  • can redeem points to offset part of a room booking at the rate of USD 5 / thousand My Points.
I suspect the new Prestige tier will replace the current points doubling benefit (possibly at a lower rate) and add other "tier benefits" (experiences and rewards) which are yet to be announced. To celebrate MHR are offering 100 members a complimentary upgrade to the new Prestige tier. To qualify for the prize draw, simply book and stay three nights or more at any of MHR's hotels between 1 April and 30 June 2022. If you miss out there, a further 20 lucky winners will also walk away with 50,000 My Points (worth USD 250).  We rate My Millennium as a good (albeit smallish) program, so if you are not already a member, now may be the time to consider joining.

Launch of first new yacht of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection delayed

Launch of first new yacht of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection delayed

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection said on Tuesday that it will reschedule the debut of its first new yacht, Evrima (pictured)

People itching to sail on her, including Bonvoy members, will need to wait a little longer.

Originally slated for May when it was first announced last November,  Evrima now will set sail on its inaugural voyage from Athens (Piraeus), Greece on August 6, 2022.

Ongoing supply chain and labor issues related to the pandemic were cited as the causes of the delay.

Radisson Rewards Extends Member Benefits

Radisson Rewards Extends Member Benefits

Radisson Rewards has extended its expirations for members.

Elite status extension:
They have extended your elite status through to 28 February 2023. .

Point expiration suspension:
The expiration of points is extended until June 30, 2022, for all members who had points expiring before this date. You can extend your points expiration period for the next 2 years by Staying, Donating, exchanging, purchasing, or gifting points.

Elite earning rollover:
All eligible nights and stays earned in 2021 will roll over to 2022, contributing to attaining or elevating your tier status.

Is Accor changing ALL status requirements ?

Is Accor changing ALL status requirements ?

It looks to me that Accor will be changing its qualification criteria for elite tier status levels.

The latest ALL T&C's dated 26 Jan 2022 show qualification based on either nights stayed or rewards points accumulated (Silver 2,000; Gold 7,000; Platinum 14,000 and Diamond 26,000).

However, the ALL members' site is currently showing the criteria as based on (the same number of) nights stayed or eligible spending (Silver €800, Gold €2,800; Platinum €5,600 and Diamond €10,400).

Since all tiers of members earn status points at the rate of points per €10 spent (eg 25 at say a Sofitel property), this will result in the same amount of spending required.

Why the subtle change?

While all members receive the same earning rate at a particular property (no tier bonuses), not all properties have the same earning rate for status points (eg IBIS 12.5 or 10 for both Peppers and Mantra).

So for all members, a stay at a Peppers property would, for the same spend, earn 40% compared to the identical spend at a Sofitel property.

By changing the thresholds to spending rather than based on one of only 4 earning rates, this is much fairer to members, as the same spend provides the same tier status, regardless of which properties received the spending.

If this change does come into effect, it is an improvement for Accor's ALL members. Bravo!

Four Seasons Hotel Coming to Melbourne

Four Seasons Hotel Coming to Melbourne

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has been selected as the luxury hotel partner for the new  STH BNK by Beulah development in Melbourne.

The new hotel will occupy the upper levels of one of the development's towers at 60 Southbank Parade, which is an easy walk to Melbourne Sky Tower, the Melbourne Arts Precinct, with the city proper just across the Yarra River.

Four Seasons Hotel Melbourne will include 210 rooms, and will see guests arrive via a Sky Lobby situated on the 63rd floor, with views over Melbourne’s city skyline, beachfront and Royal Botanical Gardens.

While Four Seasons operates 122 hotels and resorts, and 48 residential properties in major city centres and resort destinations in 47 countries, the Melbourne hotel will play a pivotal role for the brand’s expansion as only the second Four Seasons’ branded property in the Oceania region (the only current one being the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney).

Construction is forecast to commence late 2022 and will take approximately 5 years to complete - waiting that long is the only disappointment.

I expect to see some (unfounded) jokes made about Four Seasons and Melbourne's weather from residents of a certain other city...   (just kidding)

Hyatt makes 146 Category Changes for 2022

Hyatt makes 146 Category Changes for 2022

Disappointing news was announced today by Hyatt.  146 properties will be re-categorised, with effect from 22 March 2022.

This represents a reasonable proportion of the properties participating in World of Hyatt (approx 12.5%), but that's cold comfort if your favourites are in the group to experience increases.

69 properties will move up a category, 1 will move up 2 categories (the Hyatt Place Moab) and 76 properties will move down a category.

Disappointing, as Hyatt is also moving to peak/off-peak pricing effective from 1 March 2022, so a potential double-whammy for popular properties in peak periods.

Check the full list of Hyatt 2022 category changes to see if your favourites are affected.  You can also look at their associated FAQ page.

Bookings made prior to 22 March at properties increasing in category will be honoured at current category pricing, while those that move to a lower category will have points reimbursed. A member-friendly approach.

So if you are thinking of making a booking - Act Now !

Pictured is the Park Hyatt Sydney, which will move from Category 7 to Category 8 - one of 10 highly desirable Hyatt properties moving to the highest category previously only occupied by SLH and Destination By Hyatt residences.

Australia’s First Kimpton Hotel opens for Valentine's Day 2022

Australia’s First Kimpton Hotel opens for Valentine's Day 2022

I’m pleased to say that one of my favourite hotel chains has opened its first Australian hotel today, on Valentine’s Day.

The Kimpton Margot, Sydney is a gorgeous repurposing of an art-deco ex-public building into a luxury hotel. There is a rooftop pool (for guests only) and a separate rooftop bar to enjoy those balmy evenings.

No water views but very centrally located on Pitt Street within an easy walk of Town Hall Rail and Light Rail stations, Hyde Park and Chinatown.

IHG Rewards members can currently book an awards stay for 33,000 points per night – a premium compared to the 27,000 points required at the (older but still very nice) InterContinental Sydney that is closer to Circular Quay.

Checking my points balance right now…

For bookings with elite benefits included, make a time to talk with our associated travel agency.

A few hours go, IHG announced that it will be making several changes to its loyalty program - IHG Rewards Club.

The first to be shared relates to a new tier and bonus point earning structure:

  • a new Silver Tier is being introduced. Qualification is 10 nights (only). Tier bonus will be 20%.
  • Gold Tier will have higher qualification requirements -  20 nights or 40,000 points (currently 7 nights or 7,000 points) The biggest increase, but tier bonus will increase from 10% to 40%
  • Platinum Tier will have higher qualification requirements -  40 nights or 60,000 points (currently 30 nights or 30,000 points). Tier bonus will increase from 50% to 60%.
  • The top Elite Tier will have much higher qualification requirements -  70 nights or 120,000 points (currently 55 nights or 55,000 points)
  • Renaming of the ‘Spire Elite’ tier to ‘Diamond Elite’ - tier bonus to remain at 100%.
So far, no changes to be made to the Ambassador or Royal Ambassador programs.

All members’ statuses have been extended through February 2023. To requalify, you will need to satisfy the requirements under the new tier structure which goes live from March 2022.

Note that due to Covid-19 there are currently reduced earning requirements in place, which will remain until the changes go live on March 1, 2022 – these are as follows:
  • Gold Elite qualification by earning 7,000 points or staying seven nights
  • Platinum Elite qualification by earning 30,000 points or staying 30 nights
  • Spire Elite (soon to be known as Diamond) qualification by earning 55,000 points or staying 55 nights
One concession is that all stays from January 1, 2022 will count toward your new status when it goes live.

So, consider some of the current IHG promotions to help you get status before the criteria change in March. A 7 night stay somewhere before 1 March could be enough to qualify for Gold tier.

We will cover this program in greater detail once further details on the changes to the program are released.

Initial reaction - subject to seeing what additional benefits will be included at the various status tiers, this looks like a less attractive development. The lowest elite tier now has a minimum number of nights rerquirement only (points/spending won't get you there) and the bar has been lifted significantly for qualification at higher tiers.

Shangri-La Hotels has announced a revamp of its loyalty program, which will be renamed from Golden Circle to Circle.

The style of the program will also change. Rather than being a rewards program, it will become more revenue focussed:

  • tier status qualification will be based on either qualifying nights (the same number as  currently with Golden Circle ) or tier points earned (effectively amount spent) replacing the current option of qualification based on number of stays. There will be more flexibility to earn points from stays, F&B, Spa, Wellness and Shangri-La merchandise
  • rewards points will have a fixed earning rate (receive 1 point per US$ spent) and redemption value (15 points = US$1 - no more award tables), making Circle more similar in nature to Accor ALL and GHA Discovery.
  • Golden Circle members' points and tier status will be transferred to the new Circle program
  • the new Polaris invitation-only elite tier will be launched.
The changes are to be effective from 28 April 2022.

In the interim, for current Golden Circle members, Shangri-La is holding a Less is More promotion for a Standard Room, a Club Room or an Executive Suite at any of its participating hotels.

Book an award stay before 21 April 2022 (Hong Kong Time) for stays completed by 22 April 2022, to receive a 50% reduction in the number of points required.

Six Senses Laamu is Rewarded For Its Conservation Efforts in the Maldives

Six Senses Laamu is Rewarded For Its Conservation Efforts in the Maldives

Six Senses has long been highly regarded as a luxury spa brand with a sustainability focus (before other chains more recently caught up).

Recently, Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) the marine biology team at Six Senses Laamu, has been named Marine and Coastal category winner at the 2021 Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards for a second time (the first being in 2018).

Three independent sustainability experts judged 50 entries from 26 countries, placing MUI top in its category ahead of five other projects.

Philippa Roe, MUI’s Head Marine Biologist said that “For years, the partners within MUI – Six Senses Laamu, the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, and the Olive Ridley Project – have been gathering research on Laamu’s marine ecosystems and species, much of which was used as evidence to support marine protection.”

Shortly after this announcement, the Maldivian President and his administration designated six naturally unique and eco-rich areas in Laamu Atoll as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs):

  • the turtle nesting beach, mangrove and seagrass area of L. Gaadhoo (a neighboring uninhabited island of Six Senses Laamu),
  • the channel between Six Senses Laamu and L. Gaadhoo,
  • the mangrove of L. Hithadhoo (an inhabited island on the other side of Six Senses Laamu),
  • as well as two channels, a mangrove, a wetland and an island in other areas of the atoll.
Congratulations (and thanks) to Six Senses and more specifically Six Senses Laamu (advertiser).

Six Senses resorts and spas can be booked either direct or through IHG to earn IHG Rewards points.

IHG Rewards Members can also book award stays for 100,000 points per night.

It boasts 26 villas, each with a private pool, as well as 94 suites and is located on Sanur Beach which is known for its long stretch of sandy beach with shallow waters.

Global Hotels Alliance (GHA) has now launched its revamped Discovery program, releasing more details of the now GHA Discovery program.

The changes transform it from a guest recognition program (where guest loyalty was rewarded with  "experiences" tailored to each destination) to more of a rewards program (points earned can be redeemed for benefits, including experiences).

It has added a 4th status tier (and a further by-invitation tier) with an increasing range of benefits at each level, based on either nights stayed, spending or number of new brands experienced.

GHA lost the Omni and Rydges brands earlier this year, but NH Hotels is joining soon. So there should be 946 hotels associated with GHA Discovery by early 2022.

This places it in size (by number of hotels) roughly mid-way between Preferred Hotels and IHG.

Banyan Tree planning for growth

Banyan Tree planning for growth

Banyan Tree has unveiled plans to to double its footprint of 54 properties across 23 countries by 2025 with the introduction of 5 new brands launching in the next 18 months.

In 2022, the group will introduce the new Garrya, Homm and Folio brands, as well as two brand extensions of Banyan Tree named Veya and Escape.  Each of the 5 new brands to be released are responses to macro and regional trends such as a greater desire for well-being and sustainability-minded travel offerings.

In readiness, it has already opened 7 hotels so far this year, including:

  • last month's opening of the first Garrya Huzhou Lucun in China
  • the debut of Homm Bliss Southbeach Patong: and
  • a soft-opening of Banyan Tree Veya Phuket.
Four Garrya and two Homm have been signed in Asia with more in the pipeline.

This follows Banyan Tree Group this year signing 20 hotel management agreements worldwide including Benin, Mexico, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Thailand, China and Vietnam.

Banyan Tree has along-established reputation for luxurious spa and resort properties with an ethos of sustaianabilty and supporting local communities.  These new destinations will add exciting options.

Banyan Tree's ethos of sustainability started in 1994 when they transformed an ecological wasteland spoiled by waste from a nearby tin mine into a rejuvenated area with the first environmentally sensitive Banyan Tree resort.

Stays at Banyan Tree spas and resorts (which I highly recommend) can be either booked directly or via Accor (to receive ALL member benefits).

Raffles Hotel London | Accor confirms opening late 2022

Raffles Hotel London | Accor confirms opening late 2022

Accor has confirmed Raffles London at the OWO will open toward the end of 2022.

A combined residential and grand new hotel in the landmark Grade II listed former Old War Office on Whitehall, are being completed in partnership with Hinduja Group, which has been passionately committed to the meticulous restoration of the heritage features of the building since 2016.

Hundreds of artisan craftspeople have been commissioned to restore the historic interior elements including delicate hand-laid mosaic floors, oak panelling, chandeliers and a magnificent marble staircase.

The building will open to the public for the first time, having undergone a transformation to create 120 rooms and suites, 85 unique branded residences and 11 destination restaurants and bars.

Located at one of London’s most historically significant addresses, originally completed in 1906 and designed by British architect William Young, it has stood witness to many world-shaping events. The likes of Sir Winston Churchill, Lord Haldane and the James Bond (is that his Aston Martin DB5 out front?) author Ian Fleming have all walked the corridors of what was the Ministry of Defence headquarters.

The OWO will be the first Raffles hotel in the UK and is located opposite Horse Guards, with views towards St James’s Park, and is moments from Downing Street and UNESCO world heritage sites: The Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey

It will have an extensive wellness space featuring world leading spa and fitness partners and will be home to a rooftop restaurant and bar with panoramic views across Whitehall, the Mall and on to Buckingham Palace.

I love when historic buildings are restored & repurposed so that their beauty can be appreciated by future generations.

New Marriott Melbourne Docklands has berthed

New Marriott Melbourne Docklands has berthed

Located in the Docklands precinct of New Quay, Melbourne Marriott Docklands is the first five-star property in the harbour suburb.

It features 189 guest rooms, a rooftop infinity pool (pictured) and an exclusive M Club executive lounge.

Located just minutes from Melbourne's city centre by tram, it is also an easy walk to the bars & restaurants of New Quay and the Marvel sporting stadium.

For Bonvoy members, it is a Category 5 hotel (at least until Bonvoy's dynamic pricing commences) - identical to the Westin Melbourne, Sheraton Melbourne & Melbourne Marriott (which are my personal order of preference).

Cash prices appear to be closer to those of Melbourne Marriott than those of the Westin or Sheraton which are both located on/near Collins Street.

For more details, see the Marriott website.

Rydges leaves GHA's Discovery | retains Priority Guest Rewards

Rydges leaves GHA's Discovery | retains Priority Guest Rewards

The EVENT family of hotels, which includes  53 Rydges, 10 QT, 11 Independent Collection & 5 Atura properties around Australia and NZ (including Thredbo and Queenstown) is departing from the GHA Discovery loyalty program. Rydges will continue to tun its own Priority Guest loyalty program

Stays booked after 1 December 2021 will no longer have benefits honoured. Sad news for skiiers downunder...although there remain 2 Oaks (a separate GHA brand) properties in Queenstown

This follows the departure of Omni Hotels, effective 30 June this year. It too noted it was going to focus on its own Select Guest loyalty program.

However, NH Hotels will be joining GHA early 2022 & merging its NH Rewards program into GHA Discovery.

Could these moves be related to the revamping of GHA's loyalty program? Possibly, although it's unlikely to be quite that simple.

Perhaps GHA will requiire members to make bookings through a GHA portal to receive their benefits, rather than being able to book direct.

Time will tell.

Hilton Launches “Travel the World” for APAC travel closer to home

Hilton Launches “Travel the World” for APAC travel closer to home

This week, Hilton announced “Travel the World,” its new marketing campaign inspiring consumers to explore closer to home the wonders of local alternatives in Japan, Australia, Malaysia, & Thailand  that match the experiences at some of their favourite international destinations.

The new campaign aims to showcase how domestic travel offers a wealth of similarly wonderful experiences that are a lot more accessible. This is anticipated to appeal to in particular to families who are now more actively looking to book domestic travel versus pre-pandemic.

There is no shortage of options for culture, nature, adventure, and food and wine in these countries and the campaign seeks to highlight the best travel experiences across the region:

  • AUSTRALIA: From sipping an espresso in a Melbourne laneway café as if on the streets of Rome, to swapping the vineyards of Bordeaux for the Barossa Valley and its world-renowned shiraz, to experiencing the wildness of Litchfield National Park just outside of Darwin in place of the Amazon or diving the Great Barrier Reef outside of Cairns whilst the Maldives are off the cards.
  • JAPAN: From swapping the street foods of Thailand and Vietnam for snacking on takoyaki in Osaka and ramen in Fukuoka, to hitting the slopes of Niseko in place of the mountains in Whistler, Canada or having some retail therapy in Ginza and Shibuya instead of Paris.
  • THAILAND: From making the most of Pattaya’s vibrant rooftop dining and drinking experiences in place of Singapore and Los Angeles, to exploring the water canals of Bangkok by traditional wooden boat instead of Amsterdam and Venice or escaping to Koh Samui for its while sandy beaches and crystal clear waters while enjoying a meaningful stay scouring the home-grown farm at the resort for your dinner - similarly to Bali.
  • MALAYSIA: From swapping the historical sites of Portugal for the beautiful ruins of the Portuguese era in Malacca, to a day trip to the charming French village of Colmar Tropicale just an hour outside of Kuala Lumpur for a French food fix, or a visit to the lush green vistas and relaxing surrounds of Kokol Hills in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah as an alternative to the rice terraces and forests of Ubud in Bali.
For more information, you can watch Hilton's "Travel the World" video.

Kimpton's winter 2021 "secret" password | valid through 21 Feb 2022

Kimpton Hotels is a funky boutique hotel brand and is a luxury boutique brand of IHG.

One of its many charms is the Kimpton “secret” password or “social password” that guests can mention at check-in to get some form of perk, benefit, or bonus.

Kimpton tweeted on its official account earlier today (after a hiatus while few people were travelling) that from today through to 21 February 2022, just say ‘Just Chilling,’ to the front desk team at check-in, and you’ll be rewarded with a feel-good surprise.

Each hotel offers its own variation of the surprise, which can include items like free parking, a free breakfast, a free upgrade, complimentary bottle of wine, or mini-bar credit.

Enjoy!
